1. Horsetooth Reservoir
Activities --Boating and water sports galore now that the 1,900-surface acre reservoir is full again; a great getaway without having to drive very far.
Location -- Take Harmony Road west until it becomes Larimer County Road 38E. Follow the road over the first hogback until it makes a dramatic bend at South Bay. Turn right into the South Bay Campground. To go to Inlet Bay, continue on County Road 38E over the second hogback and turn right on Shoreline Drive. Continue for about a half mile, and look for the entrance to Inlet Bay on your right.
Sites -- South Bay: 54 electric campsites, 14 tent campsites, three cabins open in June. Inlet Bay: 53 electric sites
Cost -- $10 for tent sites, $15 for electric plus an entrance fee of $6 per day for vehicles and $6 for boats. From May through Sept., daily entrance payments will be $7 Fridays through Sundays and on holidays. Annual passes available.

2. Carter Lake
Activities -- It's the second-largest lake in Northern Colorado and an excellent place for water sports. 1,100-acre reservoir with 12 miles of shoreline.
Location -- Take Interstate 25 south to exit 250. Drive west on Colorado Highway 56 for nine miles. Turn right on Larimer County Road 23. Follow for  mile. Turn left on County Road 8E. Head west for 3.5 miles to County Road 31, which winds around the lake Sites -- 190 sites at 5 campgrounds, some with electricity

3. Boyd Lake
Activities --1,700 surface acres of water; all electric pull-through sites are ideal for RV camping.
Location -- one mile east of Loveland. Take U.S. Highway 287 south to 57th Street in north Loveland. Take 57th Street east to Larimer County Road 11C. Take County Road 11C south to the entrance.
Sites -- 148 paved pull-through electric campsites
Fee -- $16 for electric sites and $18 for electric premium sites from May 1 through Sept. 6 plus $6 for a daily entrance pass. Annual passes available.

Fee -- $14 for nonelectric, $19 for electric. Typically, the fees are doubled and the sites have two parking spaces.

Sites -- 52. Some walk-in tent sites available.

Activities -- Spectacular views and great opportunities for wildlife viewing.
Location -- Take Highway 34 from Loveland to Estes Park. In downtown Estes Park, turn left onto Colorado Highway 36. Enter Rocky Mountain National Park at the Beaver Meadows Entrance. Take the first left past the entrance station and follow the road for 1.5 miles. Take the first road on the right.

13. Colorado State Forest
Activities -- Campgrounds that are generally in less demand than those in Poudre Canyon
Location -- Drive 11 miles north of Fort Collins on U.S. Highway 287. Turn left onto Colorado Highway 14. Take Colorado Highway 14 west from Fort Collins for 66 miles to Moose Visitor Center. The Crags is expected to open in mid- to late-June.
Sites -- Ranger Lakes has 32 electric sites. North Michigan has 48 nonelectirc sites (some tent-only) and six cabins. Bockman has 52 nonelectric sites. The Crags has 26 nonelectric sites.
Fee -- $12 for nonelectric, $16 for electric, $60 for small cabins, $90 for large cabins, plus $5 daily entrance pass. Annual Colorado State Parks pass available.

Services -- Dump station at Ranger Lakes, vault toilets at all campgrounds. Water is available at maintenance station near entrance to North Michigan.

14. Jack's Gulch
Activities -- Great horse-camping sites and is a perfect staging ground to explore Pingree Park-area trails. Expected to open Monday.
Location -- Drive 11 miles north of Fort Collins on U.S. Highway 287. Turn left onto Colorado Highway 14. Drive approximately 22 miles west. Turn left onto Pingree Park Road (Larimer County Road 63E). Go south just over six miles to the campground.

Location -- Drive 11 miles north of Fort Collins on U.S. Highway 287. Turn left onto Colorado Highway 14. Travel approximately 53 miles west and turn south on to Long Draw Road (Forest Service Road 156). Drive 12 miles to campground.
Sites -- 8 tent-only sites

Activities -- The least crowded of the five campgrounds in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Location -- Until Trail Ridge Road opens, Timber Creek is accessible only from Grand Lake

Reservations -- No. Campground usually fills up later in the day than other campgrounds in RMNP.

17. Crow Valley, Pawnee National Grasslands
Activities -- If you can handle the heat, you can often get a campsite on summer weekends; sites are well shaded; superb bird-watching
Location -- Drive 40 miles east on Colorado Highway 14, turn north on Highway 77, travel 1/4 mile to campground entrance
Sites -- 10. Three group sites hold 30 people each. One group tent-only site holds 100 people.
Daily fee -- $9 for single unit, $13 for double unit
